How to Find Keywords Your Competitors Missed
The Problem with Following Competitors
Most keyword research starts with plugging a competitor URL into a tool and exporting their keyword list. There is nothing wrong with that as a starting point, but if that is your entire strategy, you are always playing catch-up.
The real opportunity lies in the keywords your competitors have not targeted yet.
Technique 1: Mine "People Also Ask" Chains
Google's "People Also Ask" boxes are a goldmine of untapped queries. Here is the trick: each time you click on a PAA question, Google loads more related questions. You can chain through dozens of queries this way.
These questions represent real search demand that often lacks dedicated content. Compile a list of 30-50 PAA questions in your niche, check their search volume, and create content that answers them comprehensively.
Technique 2: Reddit and Forum Mining
Go to Reddit, Quora, and niche forums. Search for your topic and sort by recent. Read what people are actually asking.
You will find questions phrased in ways that keyword tools miss completely. Phrases like "how do I convince my boss to invest in SEO" or "is technical SEO worth it for a 10-page site" represent real intent that nobody is targeting.
Technique 3: Google Search Console's Hidden Gems
In Search Console, filter by queries where your average position is between 20-50 and impressions are above 100. These are keywords where Google already associates your site with the topic but you do not have dedicated content.
Creating targeted pages for these terms often produces fast rankings because you already have some topical authority.
Technique 4: Adjacent Industry Keywords
Your competitors in the SEO space target SEO keywords. But your potential customers also search for adjacent topics:
- Digital marketing managers search for "how to report on marketing ROI"
- Small business owners search for "why is my website not getting customers"
- Developers search for "site speed optimization techniques"
These adjacent keywords have less competition and attract audiences who need your product but would never search for "SEO tool."
Technique 5: Seasonal and Trend-Based Gaps
Use Google Trends to find seasonal patterns in your industry. Many competitors publish evergreen content but ignore seasonal opportunities.
If searches for "SEO budget planning" spike every November as companies plan for the new year, having a comprehensive guide published in October gives you a head start on ranking before the peak.
Building Your Untapped Keyword Database
Create a spreadsheet with columns for:
- Keyword or phrase
- Source (PAA, Reddit, Search Console, etc.)
- Estimated monthly volume
- Content format needed (blog, guide, tool page)
- Competition level
Prioritize keywords where you can create something genuinely better than what currently ranks. That is where the real traffic gains are.
