How to Get Your Website Indexed by Google Faster
Understanding Google's Indexation Process
Before Google can rank your page, it needs to discover, crawl, render, and index it. Each step takes time, and bottlenecks at any stage can delay your page appearing in search results.
For established sites with regular publishing schedules, new pages might get indexed within hours. For newer or smaller sites, it can take days or weeks.
Technique 1: Submit via Search Console
The URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console lets you request indexing for specific URLs. After publishing or updating a page, submit it immediately.
Limitations: Google does not guarantee how quickly they will act on the request, and you can only submit a limited number of URLs per day. Use this for your most important pages.
Technique 2: Update Your XML Sitemap
Ensure your XML sitemap updates automatically when you publish or modify content. Include an accurate lastmod date. Google checks sitemaps regularly and prioritizes URLs with recent modifications.
If your sitemap is submitted in Search Console, Google uses it as a discovery mechanism.
Technique 3: Internal Link from High-Traffic Pages
Google recrawls popular pages frequently. If your homepage gets crawled daily, adding an internal link from your homepage to a new page means Google discovers the new page on its next homepage crawl.
Identify your most frequently crawled pages using log file analysis and use them as launch pads for new content.
Technique 4: Use the Google Indexing API
The Indexing API is officially designed for job posting and live streaming pages, but it works for other content types and provides faster indexation than Search Console submissions.
Note: Google says results may vary for non-supported content types, but many SEOs report success using the Indexing API for blog posts and regular pages.
Technique 5: Build External Signals
Pages with backlinks get indexed faster because Google follows links from sites it already crawls frequently. Sharing new content on social media, forums, and communities creates initial external signals that accelerate discovery.
Technique 6: Publish Consistently
Sites that publish on a regular schedule train Google to crawl more frequently. If you publish every Tuesday, Google learns to check your site on Tuesdays.
Inconsistent publishing means inconsistent crawling.
Common Indexation Blockers
Accidental Noindex Tags
The most common indexation problem. Check that your pages do not have noindex meta tags or X-Robots-Tag headers. This happens frequently when staging environments leak into production.
Robots.txt Blocking
If robots.txt blocks the URL path, Google cannot crawl the page. Review your robots.txt after any URL structure changes.
Canonical Tag Issues
A canonical tag pointing to a different URL tells Google not to index the current page. Verify canonical tags are self-referencing or pointing to the correct URL.
Low-Quality Content
Google may choose not to index pages it considers low-quality, duplicate, or thin. If a page is not getting indexed despite no technical blockers, the content itself may not meet Google's quality threshold.
Monitoring Indexation Health
Check weekly:
- Pages submitted vs indexed in Search Console
- Coverage report for errors and exclusions
- New pages published vs new pages indexed (indexation rate)
A healthy site should have an indexation rate above 90%. If significantly lower, investigate the excluded pages for patterns.
