Internal Linking: The Most Underrated SEO Tactic Nobody Talks About

Manoj Reddy2 min read

Why Internal Links Matter More Than You Think

Everyone obsesses over backlinks. And yes, backlinks matter. But internal links are the one lever you control completely, and most sites use them terribly.

Google uses internal links to discover pages, understand site hierarchy, and distribute authority. If your best content is buried three clicks deep with zero internal links pointing to it, Google treats it as unimportant. Simple as that.

The Hub-and-Spoke Model

Think of your site as a wheel. Hub pages cover broad topics. Spoke pages go deep on subtopics. Every spoke links back to its hub, and the hub links out to each spoke.

Example for an SEO platform:

  • Hub: "The Complete Guide to Technical SEO"
  • Spokes: "How to Fix Crawl Errors," "XML Sitemap Best Practices," "Robots.txt Guide," "Core Web Vitals Optimization"

Each spoke reinforces the hub's authority on the broader topic.

Rules for Better Internal Linking

Use Descriptive Anchor Text

"Click here" tells Google nothing. "Learn how to fix crawl errors" tells Google exactly what the target page covers.

Link from High-Authority Pages

Your homepage and top-ranking pages carry the most internal link equity. Make sure they link to pages you want to rank.

Do Not Overdo It

There is no magic number, but if every sentence contains a link, readability suffers and Google may devalue them. Aim for 3-5 internal links per 1,000 words, placed where they genuinely help the reader.

Fix Orphan Pages

Orphan pages have zero internal links pointing to them. They are invisible to Google's crawler in many cases. Run a crawl audit and find every orphan page on your site. Either link to them or consider whether they should exist at all.

A Simple Weekly Habit

Every time you publish a new post, spend five minutes finding two or three existing pages that should link to it. Then add those links. That is it. Over six months, this compounds into a seriously strong internal link graph.

Measuring the Impact

Track the number of internal links per page in your crawl reports. Watch for improvements in crawl depth and indexed page count in Search Console. Pages that gain internal links often see ranking bumps within two to four weeks.
