How We Increased Organic Traffic 340% in 6 Months: A Real Case Study
The Starting Point
In January, the site had 2,400 monthly organic sessions, 47 indexed pages, and zero content strategy. Rankings were scattered across page three and four for a handful of branded terms. Non-branded visibility was essentially zero.
The site was a B2B SaaS product in the project management space, competing against established players with domain authorities north of 70.
Month 1: Technical Foundation
Before touching content, we fixed the foundation:
- Consolidated 12 duplicate pages caused by trailing slashes and parameter URLs
- Fixed 34 broken internal links
- Added XML sitemap and submitted to Search Console
- Improved mobile page speed from 4.2s to 1.8s LCP
- Implemented proper canonical tags across the site
None of this was glamorous. All of it was necessary.
Month 2-3: Content Gap Analysis and Production
We used keyword research to identify 60 topics where competitors ranked but our site had nothing. We prioritized by:
- Monthly search volume above 200
- Keyword difficulty under 40
- Clear commercial or informational intent
We published 8 articles per month, each between 1,500 and 2,500 words. Every article targeted a primary keyword and 3-5 secondary keywords.
The Content Quality Bar
Each piece included:
- Original screenshots and examples
- Data points from real projects
- Actionable takeaways in every section
- Author byline with real credentials
No AI-generated filler. No 500-word articles pretending to cover a topic.
Month 4-5: Link Building and Distribution
We earned 23 backlinks through:
- Guest posts on relevant SaaS blogs (8 links)
- HARO responses that got picked up by publications (6 links)
- Original research report on project management trends (9 links from the report alone)
We also built out internal linking aggressively, connecting every new article to existing content.
Month 6: Results
- 10,500 monthly organic sessions (up 340%)
- 156 keywords ranking in the top 10 (up from 11)
- 12 featured snippets captured
- Organic sign-ups increased by 180%
What Worked Best
The single highest-impact activity was publishing comparison articles. "Product X vs Product Y" posts consistently ranked within weeks and drove high-intent traffic.
What We Would Do Differently
We waited too long to start link building. Starting outreach in month one instead of month four would have accelerated results by at least six weeks.
